Don’t Wait Until They’re Gone – Be the Reason Someone Knows They Matter
A little while back I asked a question on FaceBook, “would you miss me if we weren’t friends anymore?” A few said yes. I then proceeded to delete over 4000 “friends”, people that I never really knew, and the disappointing part of it was, only one or two really noticed.
A little while back I got a new phone and did not transfer any phone numbers and only created new contacts for those I communicated with and added others in as needed. I had over 1200 contacts in my old phone and now 553. A little less but still growing.
There is a difference between having people around you and having people who genuinely care about you. Sometimes we become so surrounded by names, conversations, and connections that we lose sight of what meaningful relationships truly look like. At the end of the day, it isn’t how many people know your name, but how many are willing to recognize when your heart is hurting, you are not yourself, or you just drifted away.
There are many people that go through a rough time and feel all alone, like no one really cares and I can relate to that. I Google searched “do you ever feel as if no one cares about you?” and there were over 212 million results.
I know these feelings intimately because I have experienced these feelings and emotions most of my life in one way or another. Sometimes the hardest battles are the ones no one else can see, the silent struggles behind a smile, and the tears that never make it past our own eyes. You can be surrounded by people and still feel completely alone, wondering if anyone would notice if you simply stopped reaching out. I have done that recently to some people that I have known for years. I noticed that my presence was not really valued, and my absence was not even noticed.
My prayer for anyone else that feel this way is written in Ephesians 3:14 For this reason [grasping the greatness of this plan by which Jews and Gentiles are joined together in Christ] I bow my knees [in reverence] before the Father [of our Lord Jesus Christ], 15 from whom every family in heaven and on earth derives its name [God—the first and ultimate Father]. 16 May He grant you out of the riches of His glory, to be strengthened and spiritually energized with power through His Spirit in your inner self, [indwelling your innermost being and personality], 17 so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through your faith. And may you, having been [deeply] rooted and [securely] grounded in love, 18 be fully capable of comprehending with all the saints (God’s people) the width and length and height and depth of His love [fully experiencing that amazing, endless love]; 19 and [that you may come] to know [practically, through personal experience] the love of Christ which far surpasses [mere] knowledge [without experience], that you may be filled up [throughout your being] to all the fullness of God [so that you may have the richest experience of God’s presence in your lives, completely filled and flooded with God Himself].
Dear hearers, when you have no more stamina, when you are out of answers, when the world tells you that you are nothing, remember that unknown days journeyed with a known and trustworthy God will always give you peace of mind and endurance for the journey. Our value is not measured by who remembers us, who calls us, or who notices our absence or not. Our value is established by the God who knows us, loves us, and calls us His own.
Here is something else to think about, God often demonstrates His love through the people He places in our lives, but we must be willing to recognize our responsibility to love one another in return. People need to know that they matter before they reach the point of wondering whether anyone would notice if they disappeared from their lives. If God is asking you to step out in faith today, do it, He will not leave you nor forsake you. If you hear the whisper of the Holy Spirit guiding you, then go boldly for God is with you.
And remember, a person’s worth has never been determined by the number of people who call them a friend, the invitations received, or the attention others give. And when you recognize someone struggling, don’t just wonder how they are doing; take the time to reach out, listen, pray, and let them know they matter. Make room in your life for relationships that encourage your spirit, speak truth into your circumstances, and remind you of the person God created you to be.
If you are reading this and feel forgotten, overlooked, or as though you don’t belong anywhere, please know that you are not alone. There is a place for you in God’s family, and His love reaches into every circumstance, every lonely moment, and every broken place. No matter what season you are walking through, there is still purpose ahead, hope to hold onto, and a God who has not given up on you.
For those who have people in your life that struggle, please don’t wait until someone is gone to realize how much their presence mattered. Reach out today to the person who has become quiet, the friend who has withdrawn, or the one who always says they are fine when you know something is wrong. Put your faith into action by making that call, sending that message, offering that prayer, or simply showing up when someone needs you to bring a candle when they are in a dark place. We cannot always change someone’s circumstances, but we can remind them that they do not have to face those circumstances alone.
