“What can I pray for you about?” should be more than just words spoken in passing; they should be words spoken from the heart, meant to be taken seriously and performed with purpose before the throne of grace. Prayer should never become an empty expression of concern, but rather a sincere commitment to carry the burdens of others before the Lord. When we ask someone how we can pray for them, we should be prepared to stop, listen, remember, and faithfully bring their needs before God.
Over the years, there have been different responses that I have heard when I’ve asked that question of those I meet. Some have been brought to tears in the midst of the prayer, while others are almost flippant, not showing a serious or respectful attitude in any way. I have come to understand that sometimes the greatest needs are carried quietly, hidden behind smiles and ordinary conversations, and that a simple willingness to pray can mean more than we realize.
I pray the way I do because I understand the importance of what is written in Ephesians 6:18 With all prayer and petition pray [with specific requests] at all times [on every occasion and in every season] in the Spirit, and with this in view, stay alert with all perseverance and petition [interceding in prayer] for all God’s people.
My prayer life is what it is because I have experienced the providence of God in my daily activities as well as His faithfulness. I have been convicted by the words of men like Charles Spurgeon, “Prayer pulls the rope below and the great bell rings above in the ears of God. Some scarcely stir the bell, for they pray so languidly. Others give but an occasional pluck at the rope. But he who wins with heaven is the man who grasps the rope boldly and pulls continuously, with all his might.” while also remembering that he said “No man can do me a truer kindness in this world than to pray for me”.
I believe that there is no greater honor a person can have than to take the needs of another before God who can do exceedingly and abundantly above all that we ask or think, and no greater blessing to receive than to be the one who is prayed for. As followers of the Lord Jesus, we are all called to be watchmen for our brethren and intercede on their behalf. This is not a responsibility reserved for pastors, church leaders, or those who believe themselves to be especially gifted in prayer. It is a calling that belongs to every child of God, and one that should be reflected in the way we love and care for one another.
I remember when I told someone that I knew that I had been praying for them, their response shocked me a little. They said confidently, “Thank you, because you are probably the only person that is.” Those words hurt my heart, but I also understand that feeling. How heartbreaking it is to think that someone can walk through difficult seasons believing that no one remembers their struggles or takes their needs before the Lord. We may never fully understand the battles another person is facing, but we can make certain that they do not have to wonder whether someone cares enough to pray.
Dear hearers, if you have someone that is praying for you on a regular basis, or more impactfully is taking their time to pray with you, cherish them, because they are loving you on an entirely different level than the rest of the world. And if someone shares a burden with you, do not allow the moment to pass without considering how you can help carry it upward. Make a note, follow up, pray again, and whenever possible, pray with them right there. Let our concern become action, our compassion become commitment, and our words become a reflection of the love of Christ.
Please remember to pray for me as I pray for all who read these words because today is one of those days that I would really appreciate the blessing of peace, clarity, and direction from God. I pray that God gives all of His children a boldness to seek the best for others and a fervent desire to pray for those that are around us because we may be the only ones that do.
Let us never underestimate what God can accomplish through a heart that is willing to intercede for another. There are people among us who desperately need encouragement, comfort, strength, and the reminder that they have not been forgotten. May we be a people who make room for one another’s burdens, who faithfully stand in prayer, and who extend the hope of Christ to everyone God places in our path. And may every person who feels alone find comfort in knowing that they are seen, loved, and never beyond the reach of God’s grace. And know that to God, you are enough.
Please pray with me:
Heavenly Father, give us hearts that are sensitive to the needs of others and a genuine desire to bring their burdens before Your throne with faith, perseverance, and love. Teach us not only to speak words of prayer but to live out our concern through encouragement, compassion, and a willingness to walk alongside those who are struggling. Please grant Your children peace where there is anxiety, strength where there is weariness, comfort where there is sorrow, and the assurance of Your presence in every season. Guide us by the Holy Spirit to make us faithful intercessors, Lord, and use our prayers and our actions to remind others that they are loved, remembered, and never alone in You. In Jesus’ precious and powerful name, Amen.
