I read a quote that has caused me to contemplate my way of life where it comes to Wisdom. “Wisdom can be defined as… SEEING a situation as God does, ACTING on it as God wills and LEARNING from it as God intended all along.” There are decisions that we need to make in just about every area of our lives where we need God’s wisdom. Decisions about our future, the people we associate with, schooling, job, relationships, finances, family, and the list goes on. In each of these places, the Lord gently calls us to slow our steps and seek His heart before we lean on our own understanding. There is a quiet strength that comes when we recognize that we do not have to know every answer because we know the One who does. More times than I care to admit I have gotten impatient and went ahead and did something without clear understanding and/or direction from the Lord, and it rarely, if ever worked out well. Looking back, I can see that many of my restless decisions came from wanting an answer immediately rather than being willing to wait for God’s timing. Sometimes the wisdom we are asking God for is found not in moving forward quickly, but in having the discernment to remain still until He makes the way clear. I pray fervently over what is written in *James 1:5 If any of you lacks wisdom [to guide him through a decision or circumstance], he is to ask of [our benevolent] God, who gives to everyone generously and without rebuke or blame, and it will be given to him. 6 But he must ask [for wisdom] in faith, without doubting [God’s willingness to help], for the one who doubts is like a billowing surge of the sea that is blown about and tossed by the wind. 7 For such a person ought not to think or expect that he will receive anything [at all] from the Lord, 8 being a double-minded man, unstable and restless in all his ways [in everything he thinks, feels, or decides].* I have heard people say that “they know what they need to do and God needs to get on board”, this is a very dangerous way of living life. When we place our plans before the Lord and then ask Him to bless what we have already decided, we are no longer truly seeking His wisdom but our own way. God promises to give us the wisdom to make godly decisions. There are many that desperately desire to have peace of mind and seek it from the people around them but don’t acknowledge that the wisdom from above is far greater than any earthly insight. The voices around us may offer opinions, experience, and even good intentions, but none can replace the voice of the One who sees the beginning and the end. I read, “To have wisdom is to apply knowledge to everyday life, so we obtain knowledge by reading God’s Word, and wisdom by meditating upon that knowledge.” As we spend time in His Word and allow it to settle deeply within us, the Lord teaches us to recognize the difference between what merely seems right and what is truly right in His sight. No matter what our future holds, as disciples of the Lord Jesus we must trust in and ask the One who holds our future in His hands for direction and discernment, then to wait expectantly for Him to answer. We are not called to walk this road alone, nor are we expected to have all the answers before we take the next faithful step. Every one of us, regardless of where we are in our journey, can come before God with humility and ask Him for the wisdom we need today. Let us encourage one another to seek His direction, to listen when He speaks, and to have the courage to be obedient even when His leading takes us somewhere we did not expect to go. If we will surrender our plans, our fears, and our need for certainty to Him, we can walk forward together with confidence, knowing that His wisdom is sufficient for every season and His presence is with us every step of the way. This is what true wisdom looks like.
