How intentional would you be with your time if you knew you only had a few days left to live? Who would you spend time with? How purposeful would you be with your words? What activities or experiences would you do? Holy Tuesday, the Tuesday before Resurrection Day was a day of confrontation for the Lord Jesus and different questions for the Pharisees. Four of the best theological and legal minds of religious law came at Jesus with four separate traps in the form of questions: 1) By what authority are You doing what You’re doing? 2) Should we pay taxes to Rome? 3) Is there marriage in heaven? 4) Which is the greatest commandment in the Mosaic Law? The reason that this was done is that the religious leaders had already decided to put Jesus to death but needed something, anything, to be able to do so and that is why they were so persistent. There was one statement made that day that brings to light the mind set of those leaders as written in *John 11:49 And one of them, Caiaphas, being high priest that year, said to them, “You know nothing at all, 50 nor do you consider that it is expedient for us that one man should die for the people, and not that the whole nation should perish.”* It was urgent that they catch Jesus in saying something to implicate Him as a false teacher and prophet for they knew that Jewish unrest would be met with the full might of Roman military strength. Because of their fear there was no way they could stand before the crowds and condemn an innocent man and yet they did. Being found guilty without a crime, the verdict before the evidence. After all the trickery and game playing, the Lord Jesus had His questions that many today should take to heart written in *Matthew 22:41 While the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them, 42 saying, “What do you think about the Christ? Whose Son is He?” They said to Him, “The Son of David.” 43 He said to them, “How then does David in the Spirit call Him ‘Lord,’ saying: 44 ‘The Lord said to my Lord, “Sit at My right hand, Till I make Your enemies Your footstool” ’? 45 If David then calls Him ‘Lord,’ how is He his Son?” 46 And no one was able to answer Him a word, nor from that day on did anyone dare question Him anymore.* As we look at this specific interaction that day, we all must question in our own heart’s, is Jesus actually Lord over our lives or is He just a man who claimed to be the Messiah? As for Caiaphas, what he said in a way was right, “The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few, or the one.” and that is why Jesus came, lived a perfect life, was crucified, died, and was buried. Jesus paid a debt He didn’t owe because everyone who has ever lived, is living now, or is yet to be born owes a debt they cannot pay. Without a doubt the most important event in world history is about to be celebrated, on that third day, that is the day that changed history as we know it, because it was to be His Story from the foundations of the world. The significance of Holy Tuesday may not be easily grasped, but in a single day, Jesus simultaneously condemned the religious authorities while confirming His deity. My beloved, may we praise God for all that Jesus did and went through for us so that we will be able to spend eternity with Him.
