When I was younger, I remember being told more of what “not” to do than what “to” do. Maybe the main reason is because one of the first words that I heard from my parents was “no.” Everyone of us has some form of inner rebel that likes to question authority, and challenge the system to find out on our own what is right for us. For me, the most important place I have discovered to look to find out what not to do, and more importantly what to do is in the Word of God. Just about every aspect of life as well as wisdom can be seen in the words of the Bible. One of the most important areas of our lives comes down to who we associate with. People around us influence us as seen in *Psalms 1:1 Blessed [happy, fortunate, prosperous, enviable, and favored by God] is the man who walks and lives not in the counsel of the wicked and ungodly [following their advice, their plans, purposes, and examples], nor stands [submissive and inactive] in the path where sinners walk, nor sits down [to relax and rest] where the scornful [and the mockers] gather.* As followers of the Lord Jesus, it’s important to recognize when our rebellious self is acting out in a way that’s not in our best interest or if it might be harmful to those around us. So, how do we take proper action in our lifestyle choices? We look to the scriptures and what is written in places like *Philippians 4:8 Finally, believers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable and worthy of respect, whatever is right and confirmed by God’s word, whatever is pure and wholesome, whatever is lovely and brings peace, whatever is admirable and of good repute; if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think continually on these things [center your mind on them, and implant them in your heart].* My desire is to live my life pleasing to the Lord Jesus, in conformity to His will for me whether I like it or not. I desire holiness more than happiness and I am thankful for those that God has put in my spiritual community to help me achieve my goal. There is a quote from John Owen that encourages me and I pray encourages all who read it as well, “Great winds and storms help fruit-bearing trees. So also do corruptions and temptations help the fruitfulness of grace and holiness. The storm loosens the earth round its roots so the tree is able to get its roots deeper into the earth, where it receives fresh supplies of nourishment. But only much later will it be seen to bring forth better fruit. So corruptions and temptations develop the roots of humility, self-abasement and mourning in a deeper search for that grace by which holiness grows strong. But only later will there be visible fruits of increased holiness.” Another thing to consider, Fruit is grown in the valleys, not on the mountaintops. My Friends, do not strive to make just good choices, but do everything in the power of the Holy Spirit to make Godly choices and that will be good not only for you but for all who you influence throughout the rest of your life. My prayer is that all who read these words prioritize God’s kingdom, trusting His direction over personal desires, and making choices that reflect His love, grace, mercy, and holiness, even when they’re difficult. May we all choose paths that lead to spiritual growth and blessing, rather than away from God’s will. May God transform our thinking (renewing our minds) so we can discern His good, acceptable, and perfect will for us. I am not sure about anyone else but I know I need to be actively applying faith to small choices, not just major life events, to build consistent spiritual growth. Heavenly Father please align my decisions with Your will, principles, and character, and help me to seek guidance through prayer, scripture, and wise counsel, to live a life that honors You and move closer to Your purpose for me. In Jesus’ precious and powerful name, Amen.
My BeLoved, may the grace and peace of the Lord Jesus, the love of God the Father, and the communion of the Holy Spirit, be with you all. Amen. In Christ Love, douglas. HE>i. pastord.blog
