A little over a year ago, after church one night, I was asked to take someone to the emergency room who had developed sudden chest pains. It was a long day but I knew for some reason that this was something I needed to do, the added fact was that there was no one else available to help. From the time we arrived at the hospital my heart was led to pray for all those that I witnessed suffering and struggling, as well as those who were working. Marissa was the medical assistant that helped us get checked in. We had a little small talk and also about her long term goals. I asked if I could pray for her and she was very agreeable. There were many sick people in the waiting room, and some of them didn’t seem to exhibit much joy or hope, so I prayed intentionally for them all, one by one. We were put into a quad area and we could overhear the conditions of those around us. One patient had failure to thrive, another had stomach issues, and one was sent to a regular room. Our nurse was a guy named Mark. He shared a little about his life, the traveling around the world he did when he was younger and how he has two daughters, to being a widower, but also shared that he really didn’t have any religious beliefs. For the most part I sat there and prayed, prayed for the guy I was with, and everyone I saw coming and going from the area. Then there was Steve. Steve came into the next bed as one went out. He had different health concerns, kidney failure, jaundice, and many more things that he seemed to want the nurses to know about. He was loud, so it was not a problem hearing all that he had to say. I was trying to figure out if there was any one person I was called there to minister to and then the shift change came. Andrew was a nurse who came in to care for the unit. After Andrew met Steve I said that I would pray for him. After I did, Andrew was thankful. I asked if he was like the Biblical Andrew who was always bringing someone to Jesus, he said he was trying but it wasn’t easy. His name led me to think about what is written in *John 1:40 One of the two who heard John speak, and followed Him, was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother. 41 He first found his own brother Simon, and said to him, “We have found the Messiah” (which is translated, the Christ). 42 And he brought him to Jesus…* and think, do I really do this with the same enthusiasm as the Disciple Andrew did? I can say a few things for sure, that night I prayed more than I had in a while. I praised God that my friend’s medical problem was not severe, but most of all that I was able to encourage a few people with the Love of Jesus along the way. My beloved, may all of God’s children not only be ready to witness to the world around us in this troubled time but be willing to step out in faith as the Lord leads to share the love of Jesus by the power of the Holy Spirit, Amen.
