The National Day of Prayer is an annual observance held on the first Thursday of May inviting people to pray for the nation. It was created in 1952 by a joint resolution of the United States Congress, and signed into law by President Harry S. Truman. This day’s observance, designated by the United States Congress, asks people “to turn to God in prayer and meditation.” Since President Washington’s swearing in, prayer has played a pivotal role in the truth that our rights come from God and not government. Many hold that the National Day of Prayer celebration reminds us of faith’s prominent place in our nation’s founding. This years theme is from *James 5:16b…The earnest (heartfelt, continued) prayer of a righteous man makes tremendous power available [dynamic in its working].* Because of the faith of many of our founding fathers, public prayer and national days of prayer have a long-standing and significant history in American tradition. Since the first call to prayer in 1775, when the Continental Congress asked the colonies to pray for wisdom in forming a nation, the call to prayer has continued through our history, including President Lincoln’s proclamation of a day of “humiliation, fasting, and prayer” in 1863. In 1988, the law was amended and signed by President Reagan, permanently setting the day as the first Thursday of every May. Each year, the president signs a proclamation, encouraging all Americans to pray on this day. The National Day of Prayer has great significance for us as a nation as it enables us to recall and to teach the way in which our founding fathers sought the wisdom of God when faced with critical decisions. My friends, today we need to be reminded of what is written in *Mark 3:25 And if a house is divided (split into factions and rebelling) against itself, that house will not be able to last.* May we as a nation truly live as One Nation Under God. Dear Lord, I pray today that everyone in our great nation will yield their lives completely to You, praying for our President, Vice President, Cabinet Members, Congressional Leaders, Supreme Court Justices, and all those involved in protecting the people of what is becoming the Un-United States of America. Replace any in office that are not devoted to You with wise leaders who inspire respect from those under their command. We ask You to grant wisdom to act with integrity all who desperately need it. Lord, we as a nation are becoming extremely desperate and need You need to take drastic actions. Prepare us for what is coming. In Jesus name, Amen.
